A few days ago I installed the Windows 8 Release Preview on a brand new SSD. I'm seriously unimpressed...... I don't use ANYTHING that is on that Metro desktop, except Internet Explorer, so it all just seems a waste of time to me.

Everything is difficult to get to, and doesn't make sense. I don't claim to be the most tech savvy person, but i'm not an idiot, even so I had to google how to shut the damn computer down!! So, I can't see me using this at all, and I am seriously toying with the idea of buying a Mac. Since I use an iphone and don't like Android phones maybe that is the sensible thing to do, as it seems Microsoft are trying to get PC users to consolidate their computers, tablets and phones, which I'm not going to do as I love my iphone.

So, maybe it's a case of "choose your side" now, and go with what you are comfortable with. I'll never be comfortable with Windows 8 or Android phones so maybe the Mac route is going to be best for me.

My new SSD is currently empty, awaiting a clean install of Windows 7, which I will run until I decide whether to switch platforms..........

why did you even............ bother?

Indeed... W8 is a "No Joy" proposition.

Win8 is like a train wreck. Best observed from a safe distance.

I don't blame you for trying it out at all. If I had the extra HD I would as well.

The tile desktop is interesting to me and I think it has tremendous potential. Omino5 Rainmeter skin shows that much more could be done with it. Recolring and adjusting transparency of the tiles should be a given.

One thing I think would be amazing would be to turn the tiles into cubes that rotate with different apps or photos on each side.

Without having seen it in action yet, why wouldn't they have a little bar with the power options and start menu button, similar to Omino5 on the desktop with the tiles?

It would/will (is it at all possible????) be interesting if the tiles can be skinned.

I too have not tried Windows 8, but everything that you can read and look at points at pretty much what you all have been saying, if you don't have a real need to upgrade don't.  It's possible that after it's release and an update it may improve, or the next update to Windows 7 includes some of the improvements that are, so to say under the hood, in Windows 8 are added to Windows 7.  We can only hope and wait..........maybe for Windows 9.

I have it on my laptop, dual booted with 7.  8 never sees the light of day. I was actually thinking of removing 8 and adding something a bit more useful. Like maybe Windows 95. Maybe 98.

Bryan...Bryan....Bryan....there's nothing wrong with WinXX ....

Do what the clever people do....stay with XX ....

where XX = 3.1, 98, XP, 7, etc.

the smart ones will move to something else, Linux, Mac...anything else.

Well...I wouldn't go THAT far...hehe.

But 7 is the best Windows to date, IMHO.

I've yet to see a positive review for Win8.  Would Windows not be better served by dumping most of the current concept and starting over?  I don't know how any of that works or if it's possible, but just seems to me they aren't looking at a good release.  By the way, just read that they are having to dump the name 'Metro' for legal reasons.  I still have Vista and am fine with it and wouldn't consider upgrading to anything else unless I am getting a new computer.

i'm not an idiot,

Ah. there's your trouble, you are over qualified to run Win8.

While that might free up some desktop space, why in the world do I have to stand on my head and whistle Dixie just to have my computer even be so kind as to deign to allow me to have a desktop?

I think it's a failure... but if you like it, Po.... it's all yours. I'm too old a dog to relearn and remember how to do in five steps what should be done in one.
